The dashboard uses the same spills data as in the Pathway Analysis tool, but focuses on displaying the volume of spills based on the material spilled and whether the spill was reported to have impacted surface of groundwater. Select spills by attributes in the left panel. The map and charts work in tandem based on your selection. Click on the tab of interest to see where spills occurred and explore how rates, volumes and pathways change based on the materials spilled.

Map of spills displays the location of unconventional oil and gas spills. Click on a spill for more information. Click on the map overlay icon in the upper right corner of the map to see all unconventional wells, shale plays and tight plays.

Annual Spill Rate shows the spill rate for each calendar year (red line) and the cumulative number of wells (black line).

Spill Rate by Life Year shows the rate of spills based on the age of the well. Younger wells — drilling, fracturing, and highest production — have more spills than more mature wells.

Boxplot of Spills presents the volume of reported spills based on plot selection. You can zoom in or out (select autoscale symbol in topright of the chart). Hover over a box plot to see volumes at selected quantiles. Points to the left are individual spills.

This chart shows which materials tend to be released in large spills. Differences in volumes released can also be observed between spills that impact water resources and those that do not.

Spills by Pathway shows the percent of spills by pathway (hover over chart).

Material Details shows more details about the materials spilled when available. Larger text indicates greater frequency. For example, select "Chemicals" material to see different chemicals that spilled.

Causal Mechanism shows the underlying cause behind a spill.
