Challenges and opportunities in mitigating sarcoptic mange in wild South American camelids
Stemming from research performed by SNAPP’s Andean Camelid Disease working group, this paper outlines the critical next steps for mitigating the spread of sarcoptic mange in wild South American vicuñas and guanacos. Recommendations include; implementation of effective management strategies to limit transmission; standardization of data collected during community capture events; assessing the potential role of community captures in mite transmission; evaluation of treatment options and best practices for implementation; and capacity building.
