Nature Positive Landscapes

  • How can the mining sector define, plan, and deliver Nature Positive outcomes at landscape scales in collaboration with governments, communities, and Indigenous Peoples?

The Nature Positive agenda aims to halt and reverse environmental degradation by 2030. We will address how to assess contributions through inclusive, regional approaches, determine appropriate decision-making frameworks for complex, multi-stakeholder mining landscapes, and identify operational governance, monitoring, and financial structures. The resulting blueprint for Nature Positive Landscape Action Plans will be co-developed and tested through a real-world pilot in Chile’s Alto Mapocho watershed, a high-biodiversity landscape that provides critical ecosystem services, where WCS is working alongside the Ministry of Environment, the Government of Santiago, the Municipality of Lo Barnechea, Anglo American and Fondo Naturaleza Chile.

Goals

  • Develop a global classification of mining landscapes to assist companies and partner NGOs as to enabling conditions and high priority areas to pursue Nature Positive Landscape approaches
  • Co-develop a flexible, science-based framework to support company-focused Nature Positive Landscapes strategies, based around a structured, inclusive approach to action-planning for nature and people.
  • Motivate a shift in practice from site-level mitigation to genuine, landscape-scale, co-governed outcomes for nature, industry and Indigenous people and local communities.
  • Contribute to securing ecological integrity, expanding conservation beyond protected areas, strengthening policy and governance, and mobilising private-sector investment in conservation.
